                         Uruguay

These pictures are from the first couple of days in Uruguay.  I think Uruguay is the friendliest country I've visited on this whole trip and is one of the first places I would recommend for someone looking to study language abroad.  There are very few gringo's, which helps keep you from speaking gringrish, and the prices for everything are very good.  Actually I would recommend Uruguay for anybody to visit.  I think I'll recommend to myself that I return there someday...

My foggy late afternoon in Colonia de Sacramento. I liked the Don Quixote theme here, you can barely see him and Sancho on the lower right.

I think the first one is my boat.

This just seemed like a good foggy early evening shot.

These were the drummers from the previous page that were warming their drums by the fire. They sounded warm to me.

Lighthouse in the historical district.

Just a rock? Look on top of the rock and you'll see the cat that caught the pigeon. I held the camera above my head and jumped for this one.

Fountain and blurry girl.

The next morning in Colonia de Sacramento was much better.

Lots of mandrin orange trees in and around town.

Lighthouse on a good day.

General historic centro stuff.

Living room by night, internet cafe by day.

Part of the old fort in the historic district.

Penguins on the dock getting ready for lunch.

Scenery on the bay in Colonia de Sacramento

A sunny shot of the Don Quixote restaurant. Two guys in the restaurant had tons of questions about the trip, it turned into 2 hours over beer.

Flag of Uruguay - the nine stripes, blue and white, represent the 9 original counties in this small country, with the Sun of May on the upper left.

Just outside of Colonia de Sacramento rests this old, ruined bull fighting arena. Locals say it was the biggest in South America.

Local kids happy to pose for a picture.

One of several sunset photos to come; this one shows 3 little kids in sail boats coming in for the night, folks in motorboat directing.

I wasn't sure if I liked this one or the next one better so I included them both.

Pretty much the same, except the father/son foreground scene. I think I like this one better.

Nice boat.

Okay, I promise this is it for the sunsets today.

This is Mario Zubizarreta, he runs the show at Bodega El Vasquito. It's about halfway between Colonia del Sacramento and Carmelo.

Not the best wine in the world but at $2 a bottle who cares. There's no sign on the main road, just a sign for the mission featured below.

I think they're mainly into the bulk stuff, for large gigs. They're not really set up for tourism but Mario will gladly show you around.

"La Estancia Jesuitica de Belen", one of the many catholic missiones established in this general area.

'This general area' means the "Misiones" district of Argentina, and the surrounding areas in Brasil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Inside the main building. This mission was founded in 1741.

It was 2km down the road from the winery and the winery fashions their label themes after this mission.

Just South of Carmelo, trees lining the highway.

A little further up the river in Mercedes, where I spent a night.

Big brush buck in Mercedes.

Typical old style Mercedes home.

Man on horse, Mercedes centro.

Cathedral belltower, Mercedes.
