San Pedro de Atacama and Antofagasta

San Pedro de Atacama was the first stop in Chile after my very cold high altitude Andes Crossing.  It's a very touristy little town of about 10,000 people and a hub for adventure and outdoor desert sports, like mountain biking and sand surfing.  The rest of the page is from Antofagasta, where I took a lot of pictures because it just seemed like an interesting place, especially because it's in the Atacama Desert region but in most ways it seems like a regular large city with lots of things to see.

Horsie riding in San Pedro de Atacama.

Funky old church, similar to the one in Susques.

Church again.

Statue of the guy who founded the little museum in the centro.

Atacama, dry and barron.

Still dry and barron.

Unique restaurant near the centro where this large wood burning oven greets you at the door.

Calama town square, this is the only shot I included from Calama. It was a decent place to stop and rest but there wasn't much to see.

Geoglyph about 35 miles west of Antofagasta. I don't know if this one is real or a replica because it looks too perfect.

Fishing port at Antofagasta.

Brightly colored cemetery in the middle of the city, closeups will be on the next page of photos.

A patient audience waits for scraps.

Antofagasta is also a large shipping port.

More fishing boats, I think they're seigners.

The other side of the port is for the fun boats, and one of the two malls in town.

Pelicans are everywhere on the shoreline.

More boats.

Skyline to the south.

The buzzards are also plentiful on the coast.

Fish market, right next to the port area.

Inside the market.

Ceviche!

More ceviche! It's best to get it at the market because it's always super fresh.

Making ceviche?

Lucia holds up a corvina, my favorite type of ceviche.

Getting tired of ceviche yet? Not me!

Unique mural outside of fish market.

Veggies on the other side of the street from fish market.

Same place.

Another angle of the port.

Peace and love in the Atacama.

Look kids, Big Ben!

Fountain, Big Ben and Cathedral.

England donated this Big Ben replica in 1910 to commemorate 100 years of Chilean independence.
